TLNT- Chapter 4
When reading this chapter what stood out to me was Technology and Change in Your Future Classroom. This section helps me as a future teacher to learn about different forms of technology and how to incorporate this into my practice. Three new tools that I have never been exposed to are digital pens, digital notebooks and electronic class notes. I am surprised to learn about the digital pen. This device records when an individual writes or speaks which can then be transferred onto a computer in typed form that can be edited, saved and emailed. This device could be used in so many classrooms today and I can name a few students in my class who could use it. This section gives teachers tips for using these devices which can make taking observation notes much easier, but I immediately thought of how students can utilize this in the classroom. I'm not sure if this would be a good thing since this takes away from students writing and learning how to have good penmanship. However, this can assist those who can't write and stay on task. A digital notepad allows individuals to draw and write on regular paper then take that material and transfer to a digital form. The digital pen is relatively inexpensive and depending on the schools budget it is worth mentioning to the principal to see if it can be purchased to use in the classroom.

Tasks Before Apps -Chapter 3
This chapter speaks about curiosity and how to get curious students thinking, asking questions and having a growth mindset. As educators, helping students to elaborate with content matter helps them to become actively engaged in their own learning. The goal of building students curiosity helps them to evolve and develop a mindset to question, analyze and evaluate material. By integrating technology into the classroom this furthers curiosity and we can help them to use ipads, computers or tablets to research and problem solve. This chapter gives an example of that one students who never raises their hand and how they can use a VR headset to ask questions using a voice-to-text tool and listen to responses about anything they want to learn more about. There is another example of a student named Maria who has a tablet with her while in the library. She was looking for a new book to read that is in a different genre than she normally reads. Since Maria has her tablet in hand she can search any author that she see to learn more about that type of book. If that is something that interests her great she has a new book, if not then she can conduct a new search for another book. It's that easy for students to utilize technology right at the tips of their fingers. This is such an important part of being a teacher and using tools to help students thrive.

The digital pen can be very helpful for many students in the classroom! However, I agree with you when you state that it can take away from penmanship. Yet, I think it can be a good incentive for students to better their handwriting. When I was in 4th grade we started the year in pencil, then eraseable pen, then pen. We could only move up to the next step when our teacher saw an improvement in our handwriting. Besides students who might actaul need the digital pen, it could be a great incentive in the classroom.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the digital pen can take away from students learning how to have good penmanship, but can still be a very great tool to have in the classroom. There are many students who have trouble with their writing skills and staying focused so this is definitely a great tool to have for those students. The digital pen is a great tool to use to have nice, clear notes available for students who can't stay on task to look back at when they have tests, etc.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed what you had to say about the digital pen. This is a great idea to mention to a principal, which will benefit the school. As I was reading the text, I thought of a child that could use the pen as well. However, as you said, a downfall could be that the student will not be given an opportunity to work on his/her penmanship and writing skills. It is great to mention that it is inexpensive because not all schools could not afford such tools, but with such a low cost maybe all schools could use this.
ReplyDeleteI love the examples you gave of students using technology as a means of engaging with their own learning. I know that I personally was always pretty quiet in class, and even though I was always paying attention, it was sometimes hard for me to actively participate in class because I was shy. Had I had access to some of the technology you described, I would have been much more comfortable researching some of my questions and exploring my own interests as related to the course content.
ReplyDeleteTechnology can help teachers motivate students to actively engage in their learning and foster a growth mindset. I agree that curiosity can help students further their growth mindset and develop skills such as research and problem solving. However, sometimes I fear that by integrating technology in the classroom students will lose motivation from traditional materials. Obviously if a teacher creates a fully blended classroom, teachers will use both, but it is still a fear of mine that students will rely on an iPad for instant research.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your post! Digital pen is a great tool that can benefit many students, especially struggling readers or students with IEPs. Digital pen records when the student speaks or write. Sometimes, students may not have enough time copying the notes on the board and the pen can allow them to write faster, be readable and saved all in one place.
